St Peter’s Preparatory School runs a fleet of liveried minibuses – driven mostly by retired policemen – from a variety of locations, including Exeter and Topsham, to take children to and from their prep school in Lympstone.
The Good Schools Guide states: “It’s the teachers here who are the stars of the show. We were astonished by the quality of those we met in this tucked-away corner of Devon, buried in greenery – fired up, very bright, very able. It is they, more than anything else that make this school remarkable and explain why the children are working up to a year, some of them two years, above their level.”
St Peter’s also has a nursery on its 28 acre site, so children as young as 3 can join the school. 30 hours and 15 hours of funding are accepted by the school. Pupils move on at 13. For the last 5 years, the percentage of Year 8 leavers who have been offered scholarships has been steadily rising. 56% of the 2013-2014 cohort of Year 8s achieved scholarships and that figure now stands at 77% – an all-time high.
Of the scholarships awarded to our last set of Year 8s, the highest number was for sport, followed by academic, drama, all round and art. Head, Mrs Charlotte Johnston, comments: “In the last 3 years, pupils at St Peter’s have garnered more scholarships to Exeter School, Taunton School and Wellington School than anywhere else. However, this term our summer Year 8 leavers also commenced Year 9 scholarships at Blundell’s, Clifton College, Sherborne School and The Maynard School. We are delighted that, as a non-selective and independent prep school, we are able to place so many of our children in such a wide variety of renowned senior schools and that such a large number are awarded scholarships by the senior schools.”
Although most children remain at St Peter’s Preparatory School until the end of Year 8, a small proportion moves on at the end of Year 6 and the most popular destination for St Peter’s Year 6 pupils in the last 3 years has been Colyton Grammar School. One of last year’s Year 6 pupils was successful in securing an A list place to Eton in 2020.
