Lympstone grew from an ancient settlement on the eastern shores of the Exe estuary. The village built its reputation on maritime trade and agriculture and about 100 fishing vessels operated from the area towards the end of the 19th Century, when Lympstone was particularly celebrated for its whitebait and the quality of its oysters.
